About RICE University
William Marsh Rice University, known simply as Rice University, is a private research university in Houston, Texas, United States. It sits on a 300-acre campus adjacent to the Houston Museum District and the Texas Medical Center.
Opened in 1912 as the Rice Institute after the murder of its namesake William Marsh Rice, Rice is a research university with an undergraduate focus. It has a 6:1 student-faculty ratio. Rice has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1985 and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". The university is organized into eight schools of academic study: Wiess School of Natural Sciences, George R. Brown School of Engineering, School of Social Sciences, School of Architecture, Shepherd School of Music, School of Humanities, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business and Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. Rice competes in 14 NCAA Division I varsity sports and is a part of the American Athletic Conference. Its teams are the Rice Owls.
The university's alumni include 26 Marshall Scholars, 12 Rhodes Scholars, 7 Churchill Scholars, and three Nobel laureates. The university has close links to NASA and has produced a number of astronauts and space scientists. In business, Rice graduates include CEOs, founders of Fortune 500 companies and four billionaires; in politics, alumni include politicians and cabinet members.
Application Fee Waiver Week
Rice University's Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will offer doctoral application fee waivers for the Fall 2024 admission term to all eligible domestic and international students. This waiver will be available for students worldwide to request at the link here from Oct. 18 - Nov. 1, 2023, or until all available waivers have been issued.
The waiver does not apply to programs in the Jones School of Business.
Eligibility Requirements:
- A minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.
- A completed application must be submitted by Nov. 27 at 10:59 p.m. CST; if an application is not submitted by this deadline, payment will be required.
- Test scores (such as GRE, TOEFL, Duolingo, IELTS, etc.) may be submitted after the Nov. 27 deadline, as long as they are submitted by the application deadline.
- Students must meet the admissions requirements set by the university, as well as any additional criteria set by your program of application.
- Students interested in this program should request an application fee waiver at the form here by Nov. 1 and then complete their Ph.D. application on or before Nov. 27.
